gathering boards

Created by Patrick for his family during the pandemic lockdown, the boards are meant for sharing and making meals an event. Each board is also a functional piece of art, doubling as a centerpiece while not in use.

Made from Florida river cypress, the pieces come from the bottom portion of the tree, near its roots. each indentation shows how the tree used to secure itsef to the ground. By hallowing it, you reveal the history of the wood and discover the inner aspects of the tree, branches that may have come out, damage from a storm, if it got cut too early.

Each hand-shaped piece takes three weeks to make and is meant to cradle everything that sits inside it. The shaping is done by following the rings of the tree, revealing its story through its different depths, almost like a topographical map.
